Statement from MPP Laurie Scott on International Womens Day

“Today we mark International Women’s Day, which gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past, present and future of women in our province. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is women in the changing world of work.

“At the time of the first International Women’s Day 109 years ago, the world of work for women looked very different than it does today. We can celebrate the fact that women have broken through a great many barriers since then.

“Today, Ontario women are leaders in business, politics, science, the arts, politics, academia, and all fields of endeavour.

“This year, for example, marks 100 years since Ontario women first gained the right to vote. Another important milestone was the election of the first woman to the Legislature 73 years ago, and then the appointment of the first woman to Cabinet 43 years ago.

“As we recognize the historic accomplishments of the women that have come before us, we draw inspiration from the women around us today and look ahead to the work that still needs to be done to ensure equality of opportunity for Ontario women.”

“After 13 years in power, life is harder under the Liberals. Skyrocketing hydro rates are unaffordable for both families and businesses. Cut after cut to health care services has meant more time waiting for care, and taxpayer dollars continue to be wasted. Ontario residents deserve better.

“In York Centre and across the province, the Ontario PC Party will continue to work hard to earn the trust of voters. I look forward to working with Roman and the rest of our Ontario PC team as we share our positive message of change.

“I would also like to thank the Honourable Joe Oliver on running a great campaign. I am proud that our Party is attracting so many distinguished Ontarians such as Joe, and we thank him for his ongoing commitment to the Progressive Conservative cause.”
